Information
The
Venetian village Giannoudi is situated 3 km away from Rethymnon and
70 km from Heraklion and Chania, in the north of Crete.
Giannoudi, like most of the Venetian defense
settlements, is situated on a hill, in an amphitheatric position
with a broaden view of the Cretan sea. The Greek State has
characterized Giannoudi and the area around the village, as a
territory of special cultural value. The gorge
of Prasses, the river on the foot of the hill and the vegetation
around them have been characterized by the Greek State as a region
of special natural beauty. The Archaeological Service of the
Ministry of Cultural Affairs has considered Monastiriako as a
building of architectural and historical commemoration value.
The
rebuilding of Monastiriako in four traditional villas has been done
by special technicians and under the supervision of the
Archaeological Service.
Three kilometers from the beach stretching east
of Rethymnon and 15 minutes from the walls and town of its
ancient harbor, barely an hour from Chania - this is a convenient,
characterful and comfortable base from which to explore. Take trips
to the White Mountains and Sfakia, the gorge at Prassies, the
wonderful route through old villages on the way to Zaros (also a
scenic way of reaching Agia Galini on the south coast).
The splendid Arkadi monastery is 30 minutes by
car.
We recommend to rent a car, other means of
transport are limited and infrequent.
